Now that school is back in full swing, it can feel like the fun and slow days of the summer are behind us. We are back to busy mornings, homework, and less time with our kids. And while we can’t spend all day at the pool or head off on an impromptu adventure during the week anymore, we can make the most of our afternoons with our kids. Whether you’re looking for a special activity to do with your child as a reward for good behavior or good grades or you’re just looking for something fun to do after you pick them up from school, we’ve got you covered with the ideas in this article!

Head to a playground.

One of the best options for after school fun is having fun on a local playground! It works for a variety of ages, and in most cases, it’s free (or cheap). You can find our list of local outdoor playgrounds here. Not good weather for playing outside? Check out our list of local indoor play spots here.

Knock down some pins.

If you’re looking for something a little different than playing on a playground, our local bowling alley can be a fun afterschool activity! You can enjoy some air conditioning and still get some energy out. There’s also an arcade, and snacks available.

Enjoy a sweet treat.

Taking your child to for a sweet treat is a great way to spend an afternoon, especially if you are looking for a reward for doing well in school or just want to have some special one-on-one time with them. We have a list of local ice cream places here for you to check out!

See some animals.

If you have a child who loves animals, that can be a fun and easy afternoon activity! You can take them to the Tifton Pet Center or Petsense to check out some cool animals without spending any money (unless you need to pick up some pet supplies yourself of course!) You can also pick up some treats for our local animal shelter and take your child to hand them out and love on all the sweet animals there. If you’re looking more for cool farm animals, you can check out the petting zoo at Rutland Farms or see the animals at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture (both of these options have a playground and ice cream as a bonus!).

Go shopping.

While it’s not sustainable to take your child to one of their favorite local shops everyday afterschool, it can nice to do occasionally, especially if you are looking for a way to treat them. If your child is into comics, superheroes, video games, and other things like that, The Zone Collectibles and Gray Ghost Comics would be fun to visit with them. If they’ve got a sweet tooth, and you’re looking for something a little different than ice cream, Tifton Sweet Shop could be a great option, and if you’re looking for toys somewhere other than a big box store, The Georgia Museum of Agriculture Country Store is a good local option (it also has a playground and ice cream!).

Check out the library.

If you’re looking for another great free option for afterschool activities, look no further than your local library! The library does have afterschool programs throughout the month, but it can be a great destination even if there isn’t any programming going on that day. Take your child there to pick out books, movies, passes, or to enjoy the crafts, sensory station, or computers in the children’s section.

Get creative.

If you’re looking for something to stretch your child’s creativity a little more, Snapology and Gather Creative Studio DIY are two amazing options right here in Tifton. At Snapology, your child can do fun STEM activities, and at Gather Creative Studio DIY, your child (and you) can explore your more artistic side, with lots of different painting options.

Go for a walk.

Fall is a great time to get outside and get some exercise! Check out our list of local walking trails here.
