While there are lots of great things to do locally, sometimes you just want to get away for a little while. Whether you’re planning a short-day trip or a weekend getaway, this article is for you! We’ve got lots of short trip ideas that won’t have you in the car too long with a crying baby or cranky toddler.

Valdosta (1 hour)

Valdosta is the closest destinations in this list, and it has lots of fun things for you and your kids. One of the biggest draws in Wild Adventures Theme Park, which has roller coasters suitable for just about every age, animals, and a large waterpark. While you could easily spend a whole day at Wild Adventures, there’s also Recoil Trampoline Park where your kids can get tons of energy out jumping on the indoor trampolines, while also enjoying the air conditioning. There’s also a large arcade, laser tag, and virtual reality set up at Recoil as well. While you’re in Valdosta, you can catch a movie at GTC Cinemas or check out The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts.  

Albany (1 hour)

Albany is another great location not far from Tifton with several different fun things to do. Begin your adventure at the Flint RiverQuarium, where interactive exhibits like the touch tank and Discovery Caverns captivate young minds. Right next door, you can check out the Flint River and let the kids play at Turtle Park to burn off energy. For animal enthusiasts, Chehaw Park provides a zoo experience with over 200 animals, including cheetahs and rhinos, set amidst scenic nature trails. History buffs can explore the Thronateeska Heritage Center, featuring a planetarium, science museum, and rail car display. Don’t miss Radium Springs Gardens, one of Georgia’s Seven Natural Wonders, offering tranquil walks through lush landscapes. You’ll also want to check out the Albany Museum of Art, which has a great children’s area, and the All American Fun Park, which has bumper boats, mini golf, go-karts, an arcade, and more.

Macon and Warner Robins (1.5 hours)

Macon and Warner Robins are not much farther than Valdosta and Albany, and between the two cities, there’s a lot to offer. In Warner Robins, there’s Rigby’s Entertainment Complex, which houses an arcade, go-karts, bowling alley, skating rink, and water park all at one location. In Warner Robins, there is also the Museum of Aviation, and Macon has several museums as well including the Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, The Big House Museum, the Tubman Museum, and more. While you’re in Macon, you can also check out their Urban Air trampoline and adventure park. If you’re willing to brave the outdoors, you can visit Fort Hawkins, the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, or go on an Ocmulgee Outdoor Expedition. If you’re looking for some free fun outdoors, visit Filmore Thomas Park, which features basketball courts, a pavilion, a playground, nature trail, and splashpad.

Ichetucknee Springs (2 hours)

If you’re looking for a relaxing day trip or weekend getaway that’s not far from South Georgia, Itchetucknee Springs is a great option. This Florida State Park has a beautiful river you can paddle or tube down as well as a blue hole you can snorkel. There are also bicycle and hiking trails and plenty of opportunities to view local wildlife.

Tallahassee (2 hours)

Tallahassee is just two hours away from Tifton, and there are so many things to do for you and your family. You can visit the Tallahassee Museum which has a little something for everyone, like: wildlife exhibits and nature trails, Florida history, a dinosaur display, zipline and aerial adventures, and more. If you have a child who loves cars, the Tallahassee Automobile Museum is a must see. You can also explore some of Florida’s history at the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. If you’re looking to spend some time outdoors, Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park is a beautiful spot with gardens, walking trails, and a lake for kayaking or paddleboarding. For more active fun, check out Urban Air Adventure Park or Fun Station, which offers go-karts, mini golf, laser tag, and arcade games. Don’t forget to stop by Cascades Park in downtown Tallahassee—it has a splash pad, playground, and open space perfect for a picnic or letting the kids run around. Whether you’re after nature, history, or hands-on fun, Tallahassee makes a great day trip for the whole family.

Columbus (2.5 hours)

Just a couple hours from Tifton, Columbus is packed with family-friendly adventures perfect for a summer day trip or weekend escape. Kids will love splashing around at Woodruff Park’s free splash pad before exploring the Chattahoochee RiverWalk, a scenic, stroller-friendly trail ideal for biking or walking. The Coca-Cola Space Science Center offers hands-on exhibits and a planetarium that sparks curiosity in kids of all ages. You can also visit the National Infantry Museum, which offers interactive military exhibits and a kid-approved giant playground right outside. Add in local dining and riverfront fun, and Columbus makes for a memorable family getaway close to home.

Jacksonville and Fernadina Beach (2.5 hours)

If you’re in the mood for a coastal getaway, Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach make for a perfect day trip. Fernandina Beach offers a charming downtown with local shops and restaurants, plus Fort Clinch State Park where families can tour a historic fort, enjoy hiking trails, or relax on the beach. Jacksonville has big city amenities with family-friendly spots like the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Jacksonville “Hands On” Children Museum, the Museum of Science and History (MOSH), and Adventure Landing—a water park and amusement center rolled into one. The Jacksonville Beach Pier is also a great stop for a seaside stroll or some laid-back fishing.

Dothan (2.5 hours)

Just a couple of hours from Tifton, Dothan offers a variety of family attractions with a small-town feel. Visit Landmark Park, an open-air museum and farm with animals, historical buildings, a planetarium, and walking trails. If you’re looking to cool off, Water World Water Park is open seasonally and perfect for younger kids. For indoor fun, check out the Wiregrass Museum of Art or take the kids to Xtreme Air Mega Park, which has an arcade, inflatables, slides, and indoor trampolines.

LaGrange and Pine Mountain (3 hours)

LaGrange and Pine Mountain are full of family-friendly adventures. Start your day at Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain, where you can drive through and get up close with zebras, giraffes, and more. They also have buses or cars you can rent to go through the animals if you don’t want to brave it with your own vehicle. Then, cool down at Great Wolf Lodge in LaGrange, which offers an indoor water park perfect for any weather. If you’re looking to spend time outdoors, Callaway Gardens has something for everyone—bike trails, a butterfly house, a beach area, and beautiful walking paths. You can also soak up some history (and nature) at FDR State Park and Roosevelt’s Little White House.
