The New Year is almost here, which means it’s a time many people, parents and non-parents alike, make resolutions for the New Year. And while resolutions can be about anything, the most common resolution has to do with our health: eating better and/or exercising more. In this article, we’ll go over some ways you can work out as a mom, whether you are a stay at home more or a working more.

Utilize a gym with childcare.
One of the best ways to make sure you get a workout in as a mom who doesn’t get a lot of time to herself is by utilizing a gym with childcare. Tiftarea YMCA offers child watch Monday-Thursdays 9:00 am-12:00 pm and 4:00-8:00 pm as well as Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. Children 10 and over can also work out at this facility, and there’s an older child area as well. This service is included as part of your membership, making it a great option for local families. Additionally, Chaos Fitness does also offer some childcare hours as well. To learn more about what childcare options are available, give them a call at 229-347-1948.

Work out when the kids are asleep.
Another option for working out as a mom is to take advantage of the time they’re sleeping. This could look like going to a heated power yoga class at Tifton Yoga Center at 6:00 am, Y Fit at Tiftarea YMCA at 5:30 am, or any early morning class or workout at a local gym. However, it could also look like doing a 10-15 minute walk, workout video on YouTube, or going for a quick jog in the mornings before your kid wakes up or during their naptime. Even just 10 minutes each day consistently can make a difference and be a great building block for a healthy future.

Take the kids along for the ride (or walk).
Sometimes you just can’t get time away or don’t want to get time away from your kids to work out, and that’s okay! One way you can get around this is to take the kids along—moving their bodies is a great for them too! There are a lot of great walking/biking tracks that the whole family can enjoy. Whether your kids are small enough to ride along in the stroller or they bring their scooter, bike, or roller skates, they can be a part of the walk or jog too! And while a walking track can be a great, contained option for children, you can make it even easier on yourself and just walk around your neighborhood. This can be a great way to make the barrier to entry as small as possible, and you can build it into your routine (for example, a family walk after dinner or taking the kids for a walk first thing in the morning).

Use your lunch break.
If you’re a working mom, you can take advantage of your lunch break at work to get moving! Whether you hit up one of the local walking trails, lift weights at the gym, or attend a lunch class, this is a great block of time to take advantage of. You don’t have to overdo it and get too sweaty—remember even a little movement consistently can make a difference.

Move while the kids play.
Again, sometimes it’s not possible to work out alone, and that’s okay. In addition to the option of taking your kids along for a walk or bike ride at one of the local walking tracks, you can also take advantage of their playtime. Many of us take our kids to play at a local park fairly regularly but then just sit and look at our phone while they run around. Use that time to your advantage instead and walk around the playground or even play with them on the playground.
